Common questions

Do I need an account to start?

No. Open the app and snap your first document — no sign-up, no setup. Your captures live in an unclaimed vault on that device until you claim it.

What does "claiming my vault" mean?

Adding your email so your vault is saved to you, not just to the phone. Tap Save to your vault after a capture, enter your email, and type the one-time code we send. There is no password to create or remember.

I got a new iPhone (or reinstalled). How do I get my vault back?

On the first screen, tap "Already saved a vault? Sign in", enter the email you claimed with, and type the one-time code. Your records come back; nothing was stored only on the old phone.

Rootstead misread a field. How do I fix it?

Tap the field — in the reveal right after a capture, or any time in the record's detail page. Edit the value and save. Rootstead learns from your corrections, and every field stays linked to the exact spot on the page it was read from.

How do I delete a document?

In your vault, touch and hold the document, then confirm removal. This deletes the record and its stored images.

How do I delete my account and everything in it?

Email support@rootstead.app from the address your vault is saved to and ask for deletion. We delete the vault — documents, records, and account — within 30 days and confirm when it's done.

Why does the app ask for camera or notification access?

The camera is used only to scan your documents, and is requested the first time you capture. Notifications are requested only if you tap Remind me on a date Rootstead spotted — reminders are the only thing we send.

Why do some values show as •••••• in the app?

High-sensitivity numbers (like license numbers) are encrypted at rest and stay masked. That's deliberate — see our Privacy Policy for how your data is protected.

Which devices does Rootstead support?

iPhone, running iOS 17 or later. iPad and Android are not supported yet.
